Why Website Maintenance is critical to the Success of your business
Your website generates leads, customers and revenue. It’s how customers find you. But what if something goes wrong? Do you have a plan in place?
Just like any software, websites require maintenance to keeping the site working effectively. Avoiding website maintenance is like not having regular maintenance for your car. You wouldn’t drive your car very long if you didn’t look after its oil changes, brakes, tires… would you? Well, the same process is true for your website. Your website should always be live, ready for customers and presenting your business at its finest.
TechDust.com’s WordPress Care Plans are geared specifically for San Diego Small Businesses to save you time administering one of your business’ most valuable asset. They are designed to keep your website running smoothly and protected.
Websites Are Not a “Set and Forget” anymore
Websites are no longer a “set and forget” part of your business. As technology evolves, website software is constantly being updated to make it more secure, faster and more visible to search engines. Just like your smartphone and your computer, websites need to be updated. More and more websites are getting hacked and attacked, including the big players like Twitter and Facebook as well as millions of small businesses every day.
If you don’t have website maintenance carried out monthly, you may actually be throwing money out the window. When visitors go to a website and find things wrong with it, they often don’t stick around. Many website owners never check their website to see how it’s functioning. Missed website issues or downtime can lose you potential customers.
The Benefits of Maintenance
Your competitors are innovating (or maybe leading the way) with new websites and online strategies. The world is getting smaller as more of us connect to the web and that means that it is only going to get harder to keep up, let alone stay ahead of the pack.
Sometimes it can seem like WordPress releases a new version or patch every second day. This is a good thing, as popular as WordPress is with business owners like you, it is equally popular for hackers to have a good go. That is why updating WordPress with each version is the single best way to ensure you are protected.
Many people don’t realize the benefits of site maintenance:
The website performance, it’s load time, downtime and uptime, is all dependent on the WordPress software and plugin functioning as they should ( and on the recent version).
The website growth, it’s fresh content, analytics monitoring and design changes, is all dependent on you having someone making sure all updates to the website are done in a smooth and error-free fashion.
At TechDust.com we take great care to first backup the website, and check the website after our updates for any issues. Our software keeps a record of plugins we update so if there is ever an issue we see what plugin version was changed and revert back. Also included in our monthly maintenance report are the performance and security scans. If in the event we ever catch a plugin issue, it becomes a support ticket and we address it before you ever know there’s a problem.
Daily backups, security checks, performance checks, SEO rankings against your competition, analytics and monthly comprehensive reporting are a major part of our maintenance workflow.
What happens if my website goes down, is hacked, breaks, etc ?
The whole purpose of our WordPress care plans is preventative care, so we hope to prevent anything from happening. However, in the case your website gets rolled into the ER, we will be there right by it’s side communicating with the web hosting on your behalf. We cannot promise your website will not be hacked but can promise we will do everything in our power to prevent it, as well as assist in the restoration and cleanup of the website with one of our backups.
Dangers of Do It Yourself Maintenance
Maintaining your site yourself could cost you more than you may think. If you just update from your WordPress admin, you wouldn’t have a record of what was done. If an update to a plugin created an issue a couple weeks later, it would be difficult to know what changed and how you should revert back without restoring a very old backup (and possibly losing content changes, sales orders, contact entries, you name it).
Keeping your website up to date, backed up, secure, and bringing in new leads can be time-consuming and a little tedious. It takes you away from what you should be doing, which is building relationships with your customers, staff and partners. The technology and strategies continue to evolve and it’s a full-time job to keep abreast of all the trends and developments.
When you sign up for one of our Support Plans, we keep your website visible and running smoothly and safely for your audience. No contract or commitment — just peace of mind.
It Costs More to Fix Than to Maintain
Inexperience and neglect can damage the look and functionality of your website. When that happens, you have a choice to make. One, you try and fix it yourself, in which case you may do further damage. Or two, you can then pay the (sometimes hefty) price for someone experienced to fix it. Just like your car, it costs more to fix it than it does to maintain it properly. Regular oil changes help keep your car running properly, regular site maintenance helps keeps your website running properly and effectively.
My website was not build by TechDust.com, can I still be on a client care plan?
Absolutely, we welcome clients who are looking for a long term relationship with a dedicated webmaster. However, the setup procedure will be a bit different. We will have to examine the site more thoroughly, making sure it was set up correctly by the previous designer. With the evaluation we will perform all the “Website Updates and Monitoring” tasks and make a full backup. Most importantly we will make a list of issues to fix and suggestions for improvement needed in order to proceed with the website on a monthly plan. Typically, this Website Evaluation is a fixed 3-hour fee.
